Living in Damascus, MD: A Renter's Guide to Upcounty Montgomery County

October 6, 2026 · 6 min read · Tilmon Properties

Tucked into the northern edge of Montgomery County, Damascus offers something that's increasingly hard to find in the DC region: a real small-town center, surrounded by farmland and parks, still within reach of the I-270 job corridor.

The feel of the town

Damascus has a community-first atmosphere. The town center along Route 27 has grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants and everyday services, so most errands are a short drive away. It's the kind of place where people know their neighbors, local sports draw a crowd, and seasonal community events are a big deal.

Parks and the outdoors

If you like being outside, Damascus is hard to beat for the price:

Schools

Damascus is served by Montgomery County Public Schools, including Damascus High School and John T. Baker Middle School. Boundaries can change, so always confirm the assigned schools for a specific address with the MCPS school assignment tool before you sign a lease.

Getting around

Damascus is a driving community. Route 27 connects you to I-270 at Clarksburg/Germantown, which puts Germantown, Gaithersburg, Rockville and Frederick within commuting range. Commuters heading into DC often drive to the MARC train at Germantown or to the Red Line at Shady Grove. Plenty of parking is a big plus here, and it's one of the reasons people choose Damascus over denser areas closer in.

What renting looks like

The rental market in Damascus is small compared to downcounty, so good units don't last long. You'll find a mix of single-family homes, townhouses and small apartment buildings. What you typically get for your money is more space, more light and more parking than a comparable unit inside the Beltway.

Now leasing in Damascus: Tilmon Properties manages two buildings in the heart of Damascus. Our newly renovated three-bedroom apartment has quartz countertops, stainless steel appliances, vinyl plank floors and plenty of parking, and it's less than five minutes from schools and shopping. More units are coming online soon. See the unit and video tour →

Is Damascus right for you?

Damascus is a great fit if you want quiet, space and green space, work somewhere along I-270 or don't commute daily, and don't mind driving for most trips. If you need to walk to a Metro station, a closer-in neighborhood may suit you better.
